PARSIPPANY, N.J. and PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla., Sept. 11, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- PGA TOUR and Avis Car Rental announced today that Rory McIlroy has been voted the August PGA TOUR Player of the Month presented by Avis. As the official rental car company of the PGA TOUR, Avis will make a $50,000 contribution to the Rory McIlroy Foundation.

In a fan decision on PGATOUR.COM, McIlroy received 48 percent of the votes and outpolled Sergio Garcia, Nick Watney and Keegan Bradley. The four were nominated by a panel of national media for their performances during the month of August.

During the month of August, McIlroy decimated the field at the PGA Championship as he won his second major championship title by a PGA Championship-record eight shots. With his victory, McIlroy regained the No. 1 position in the Official World Golf Ranking. In his other two starts in August, McIlroy finished tied for fifth at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and tied for 24th at The Barclays at the first FedExCup Playoff event.
